“The Mansion House” was a popular name for hotels built in the mid to late 1800’s. There are still a few Mansion House Hotels in operation today around southern Ontario. This one, along with the Queens Hotel (known as Market Square), were the main meeting places in Sutton at this time. The earliest known owner was John MacDonald from Scotland, followed by James Sharpe.
Built in 1857, the Mansion House Hotel quickly became a popular spot for travellers. It welcomed many tourists from the mid-1800s until the mid-1900s. At the time, you could rent a room for $1 a night. At one point, George Wellington Culverwell, had an orchestra playing on summer weekends on the balcony over High Street.
In 1919 James Graham took over the hotel and renamed it “The Graham House”. Already having the Hotel Belvedere in Pefferlaw, he was no stranger to the business. At the front of the hotel there was a veterinary run by Dr. and Mrs. Lavery.
Throughout the last almost two centuries, The Mansion House has been a symbol of hospitality and community across southern Ontario.
Today, in 2025, we’re proud to bring that legacy back to life. The Mansion House Restaurant & Bar blends historic charm with a fresh, modern vibe. Come in for great food, cold drinks, and a warm welcome — just like the old days, but made for today!
